Anything we should know?: For the record, coming up with a persona for someone who IS mythology is... interesting. On that note, I've done my best to pre-nerf her more game breaking abilities, but let me know if anything else should be toned down.

AU | Previous Game Backstory:
Canon Background: http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Death_%28New_Earth%29
Death woke up in Mayfield next to a skeleton wearing pajamas. This... basically set the tone for the non-horror portions of her time in Mayfield. Being mortal for longer than a day was a decidedly new experience for her. While she does greatly enjoy everything that life brings, she still often worried about the fact that none of this should have been happening. Being assigned to the same house as another incarnation of Death proved to be very enlightening. She was able to talk to him about things that she had never been able to discuss with anyone else because they would never understand. While this had never bothered her, it proved to be something she didn't even realize she was missing. Also, confusing as hell in a third person narrative and thus he will henceforth be referred to as DEATH by way of distinction.
Christmas brought the first signs of the more horrific aspects of Mayfield. While she was not personally impacted, she quickly fell into the role of providing emotional support for as many people as she could. Though she found only being able to be in one place at a time to do so rather constraining. Christmas also marked the solidification of the familial relationship within “Death Clan”. Though the overall membership of this group fluctuated over her two years in Mayfield, it always consisted of two households: Hers and that of her assigned husband's granddaughter, Susan. The two households jointly celebrated Christmas (or Hogswatch, she was never terribly fussed about what to call it at this point). Many of the key members were already in place at this point: Death, DEATH, Susan, the Riddler and Little Slugger (a self proclaimed “monster”). This is also roughly the time she realized that baking was an excellent way to fill the copious amount of free time she suddenly found herself with because she wasn't spending it all, well, being Death.
She was eventually assigned by the town to work as a door to door makeup saleslady. She actually greatly enjoyed this job (despite the products being rather difficult to achieve a goth look with) because it provided an excellent excuse to go around meeting new people. Since she's accustomed to knowing everyone at home, she did her best to make that so in Mayfield as well. She also quickly discovered that as long as she had the makeup case in hand, Mayfield didn't actually care that she was mostly spending her time checking on various inhabitants she was worried about.
As one small aspect of an elaborate April Fool's joke, there was a giant robot rampaging through the town. Death's role in this largely consisted of ensuring the current children of her household made it to safety, but this marked the beginning of the realization that she could take active action in Mayfield as there were unlikely to be the same sort of consequences there are when she is an aspect of reality itself.
Eventually, Mayfield decided it would be fun to have characters assigned to start killing each other via random lottery. Death was not terribly impressed with this development, but wasn't able to do anything about it except offer comfort to the killed and the killers after the fact and try to help people make sense of it all. Also the revelation that she knew Susan was living with a low grade supervillain and never remembered to bring it up. Awkward times in Death Clan with the attempted murders.
On the Fourth of July, the minds of Mayfield's citizens became a battleground as their true selves did battle with planted memories of having lived here all their lives. This proved particularly difficult for Slugger, who struggled with the idea of being a monster. This marked a turning point in their relationship, as Death comforted him. Her desire to show him there was something about him worth loving would prove to be a recurring theme.
The final core member to join Death Clan was Luke Triton at Susan and Eddie's house. Death often worried about him, as she knew it couldn't possibly be easy to be the most normal member of the family.
Toward the end of the summer, the Deaths were locked in a romantic hotel room together. This is mentioned largely as an illustration of how epically dense they can be for near omniscient beings.
October brought the first regain related zombie outbreak. There were a few of those. Death is not a fan of zombies and having to deal with plagues of them did not help. The non-permanence of death in Mayfield already irked her as she does not appreciate people meddling in her domain. It was bad enough without undead.
Thanksgiving was followed by a nuclear attack obliterating most of the town. While the largest threat initially appeared to be rampaging bands of cannibals, eventually radiation sickness began to set in. Death spent this time in the bunker, trying to comfort friends and those who she had come to regard as family as their strength slowly ebbed and one by one they succumbed. While she had felt many things in Mayfield, this was the first time she had truly felt helpless. With nothing to do but hold hands and wait, she began to realize a new side of life.
The resurrection mechanism of Mayfield was destroyed in January. While this should have been comforting as it restored a more traditional order of things, it was still wrong. Especially since her entire family began succumbing to old injuries and were generally in a bad emotional state. She spent most of the time bringing soup and comfort to the re-dying. This was also when she really realized that at some point the Riddler had wormed his way into the place in her heart once filled by her brother Morpheus. Neither of them ever listened to her.
On Valentines Day, flowers on the kitchen table caused Death and DEATH to feel intense puppy love. Just another crazy Mayfield holiday. Except when the effects faded, they realized that while the more physical feelings were the flowers, every word they had said to each other was true. Which left her ten billion years old and trying to figure out how romance worked. After a phone call that basically destroyed her credibility as an all knowing advice giver, she eventually just talked to DEATH and found that the confusion was mutual. Of course, they had been acting like an old married couple for so long that some people took quite a while to realize anything had changed...
Then there was an outbreak of ghosts possessing things around Mayfield. Back to reaping.
This is also roughly when she met Johan Liebert at a particularly low point. And did the only thing she could do: Try to teach him there was something there worth loving.
And then there was another zombie outbreak. Zombies that didn't even reap properly. She and DEATH hit the bar after that one. It was getting ridiculous.
After the evil carnival incident, she was about ready to put a leash on the more mortal members of Death Clan. In the most loving way possible.
At this point Mayfield's integrity began to noticeably degrade due to things going very poorly for the Powers That Be. The man who had been controlling Mayfield was eventually defeated. While he had been the subject of considerable anger from her, when she saw him frightened and dying, all she could do was offer comfort.
But in death he revealed to other occupants that all the inhabitants of Mayfield were actually data copied from their original selves. Having never actually been a person, this didn't shake Death nearly as much as some of the others. She viewed the revelation as being an aspect of her greater self, very similar to how she is able to be in a single place when she spends a day mortal. In the end, there was little time for anyone to dwell on this revelation as Mayfield chose that time to completely fall apart, forcing the remaining inhabitants to flee into a new world of possibility.
AU | Previous Game Differences (List form):
- Has actually felt helpless
- Is more willing to actively intervene
- Has experienced romantic love
- Is actually a copy of the original (She interprets this as being an independent aspect of the greater concept)
- Bakes
- Really hates zombies
Canon Standing: Roughly a year before the DC reboot
Personality:
The most immediately obvious thing about Death is that she is a little ray of sunshine. She’s very good at finding the best in people and events. She takes joy in the simple things, which has not been diminished even after two years of being essentially mortal. While mortal she has previously expressed the sentiment that apples are amazing and generally raved over little things like food. She figures it’s just as easy to be nice to people as it is to be creepy, and it’s definitely a lot more fun.
She also loves absolutely everybody. Being Death means that she knows everyone, and is able to understand them. Since "No one is creepy from the inside" she can’t help loving people. Additionally, she is genuinely interested in people’s lives. Not surprisingly, she will quickly throw herself into getting to know the rest of the residents, no matter how curmudgeonly they might be. She has long considered getting to meet so many neat people to be the best part of her job, and takes particular joy in getting to meet people when they aren’t terrified on account of having just died. Two years of mortality have given her time to form many close attachments and led her to take on a somewhat grandmotherly persona. With extended contact with mortals, she is quite prone to beginning to view them as family. Teaching people that there is something to them worth loving has become something of a recurring theme in her extended contact with mortals.
Despite the usual fearful reactions, she is a very down-to-Earth anthropomorphic personification. Death is a steady job, and she’s had plenty of time to grow accustomed to it. Out of all the Endless, she is by far the most well adjusted (admittedly, this isn't hard). She empathizes with people, but she also knows when they need someone to pull them out of a funk. And if that takes the form of throwing a loaf of bread at them, so be it. She’s even less likely to put up with that sort of nonsense from people she is particularly close to. This is quite the opposite of a lack of patience though, motivated by an honest desire to help. That said, it is possible to make her angry, and going out of one’s way to hurt people is a good way to do so.
Although she enjoys her job a great deal, she does take it very seriously. Having seen firsthand what happens when she doesn’t do it right, she knows full well her place in the universe. Fortunately, late developments in Mayfield have given her the knowledge that the majority of her self is still doing her job at home. She is generally quite uncompromising in her responsibilities (she can’t afford not to be), but has been known to make exceptions. Notably, she made Hob Gadling unable to die because she felt that Dream needed a friend. There have been other cases of her making exceptions, usually because she has some sort of prior connection to the person, but these are very rare. In the end she knows she has a responsibility to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Key Personality Differences:
The differences are generally fairly subtle, but she's more willing to get involved directly after being mortal for two years. Knowing that she's essentially a spinoff of her greater self will make her less anxious about the fact that she's been pulled away from her duties, which only reinforces that new willingness to act. That said, she doesn't tend to be an actual combatant. Unless there are zombies involved.
She's developed a somewhat grandmotherly persona. Her tendency to love everyone has specifically moved into a willingness to regard many people as being family. She also has a habit of taking on projects, people she wants to teach that they're worth loving.
Canon Powers:
Shapeshifting- The ability to change her appearance at will, including clothing (Mind)
Passing unnoticed- Mortals don't generally see her unless she wants them to (Mind)
Teleportation (Mind)
Freedom from the lesser aspects of mortality- she doesn't need to eat or sleep (Mind) [She's actually outright immortal because who would even collect her but obviously that is right out for game purposes]
Touch of Death- Able to kill with a touch (Almighty)
Breath of Life- Able to infuse life into inanimate objects [Going out on a limb and saying this one is outright deactivated]
